Maxwell Crayton is a man who gave up everything to protect and serve his country. As part of a special unit he was sent on a mission that should have taken six months but wound up taking three years. The unit is so secret that no one uses a real name; they all go by code names. As part of his cover Max was pronounced dead leaving behind his sister, Miriam, and the woman he loved, Katherine.
At the time of Max’s so-called death, Kat found herself pregnant and all alone. She feels that she is unable to care for a child. Her fears stem from the fact that her mother Ellen is insane and is currently in prison for killing Kat’s father. What if her mother’s condition is genetic. Kat’s only hope is to have Max’s sister Miriam raise the baby as her own.
Three years after his burial, Max comes home alive, but full of guilt. When he arrives at his sister’s home he finds out that he has a niece Elizabeth or Lizzie as she prefers to be called. He never suspects that the child is his and his sister never tells him.
When Lizzie is ten years old, Miriam becomes ill and requires a kidney transplant. Kat hasn’t heard from Miriam for a while and she goes to see what is wrong. That is when she comes face to face with the man she has never stopped loving and who she thought was dead. After all those years they still have never stopped loving each other.
Things go from bad to worse when Lizzie is kidnapped. Who would do that? Is it an old enemy of Max’s? Is it someone after Kat? Kat is a Forensic Psychiatrist and works with the District Attorney and many other government organizations. Could someone she helped put in jail be responsible?
Through everything you can feel the love that Kat and Max have for each other. When a package arrives with Lizzie’s middle toe, Max is convinced she is dead but Kat refuses to give up hope. Can she convince Max and can the two of them save Lizzie? If Max finds out that Lizzie is actually his daughter, will he ever be able to forgive his sister and Kat for not telling him.
Lizzie is not your typical ten year old. She is smart, sassy and older than her years. She is a wonderful character and you can’t help but love her.
This was an intense book with a lot of suspense, romance and mystery. The characters are wonderful and the book was one you just can’t put down. It moves you along going from one twist to another. The person responsible is pure evil and one I did not guess. The author does a great job of keeping you guessing page after page. The ending kept me shocked and amazed I never saw it coming. I loved this book and I highly recommend it. Can’t wait for the next one.
